Hello everyone we have spent the past few weeks discussing goals, and achieving goals after retirement. When I say the word “retirement,” what pops into your mind? Is it a vacation or travel? Is it a golf course with friends? Is it time to read or do “projects”? Maybe relaxing with your grandkids? Whatever it is, I hope it’s a happy image. You’ve probably spent years planning, saving, and making money by working hard in your career. Your job may have been your passion, but now is the time to seek out new opportunities. How do we get to those happy images?

Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to.” – Harry Emerson Fosdick Once the honeymoon phase of retirement is over many people feel a sense of disappointment. They have spent so much time looking forward to retirement that after the first rush is over it feels less exciting than it was supposed to be Does that ring a bell with you? Is having something to retire to what you did, or should consider now?

Hi Shelley, I have a few minutes and thought I’d pop in. For me ( though I hope to never fully retire and have already retired from one long career and moved into my current one for over a decade now) retirement or semi, means more time to relax, to write and to explore some new learning activities.

Good Morning Iris, welcome. Yes having a plan is good. Is a good plan enough?

I agree that people should plan retirement in advance and not just from the money angle. They definitely should have something to retire TO.

I think some people get seized by inertia and drop the plan or plans. I think a lot of people need a strategy too.

I think that everyone needs a plan and a strategy. Dreams if you will and a plan to make to make the dreams come true. Dreams written down become goals.

Goals give us an opportunity to plan and a plan that takes us step by step breaks the huge challenge into doable hopefully enjoyable steps. I like to ask “how would you eat an elephant ? ( not that I would) One bite at a time

Yes it has. We had to postpone our 45th wedding anniversary trip. However, we have spent more time planning and looking forward.

What are some ways people can keep their spirits and enthusiasm up when there may be delays or obstacles to those new plans?

Keep the dream alive. Keep your goal in mind and take steps. Also make sure you have the resources to make it happen.

Good morning. Well I am in the nursing field (CNA/caregiver) I really enjoy what I do mainly taking care of the elderly and assistant living. I do have grandkids and great grandkids. I love them like no other but I also have me. I have retired but I felt I was too young to just stop so I went to school for nursing. I am still working some but I need more me time and not alone. My image is relationship

We may be at the end of one thing, but Floreen as you have done yourself it put you at the beginning of another. You went into nursing.

I love to travel sometimes I love people and good and positive conversations and also learning from others. I enjoy spending time with my family but I guess because of this pandemic, I feel so lonely.

I get that. If what you are doing brings you joy then you are lucky. If you are just being busy to be busy then do you need to rethink it? I have to close out my hour, but If you would like to continue talking I’ll send you a private message.
